Tricky Recycling


Do you have plastic plant pots you’d like to recycle instead of putting them in your general  waste (black) wheelybin? Or plastic trays in which seedlings are sold? Biggar Area Climate Care can help. 

Plastic plant pots

You can recycle these at the larger branches of B&Q. We know that Hermiston Gate (0131 297  1039) and Newcraighall (0131 297  1429) branches in Edinburgh will accept these (but Tweedbank, near Galashiels, doesn’t). You can check branch opening times and find which other B&Q branches offer this service by calling the branch, or 0333 014 3098 or visiting diy.com
We keep our eyes open for plastic plant pot recycling options closer to Biggar, and so can you! Please let us know if you find anything. 

Plastic seedling trays

If you have bought seedlings in green plastic trays with this label, you can put them in your light grey wheelybin, South Lanarkshire Council confirm. We haven’t checked other types of seedling tray yet. 

Our “Tricky Recycling” project

Biggar Area Climate Care is a local charity focused on taking practical action at a local level to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. One current project is to find and publicise the environmentally best ways to dispose of, or re-home, things people find difficult to deal with. Later this year, in conjunction with South Lanarkshire Council and a range of other organisations, we aim to publish a comprehensive list of things people need to move on (everyday ones and “tricky ones”) with suggestions about how to do this.

Science Café: Keeping old homes warm - imaging leaking heat and pumping it back October 15th, doors 19:15, prompt start 19:30. This Science Café double-bill brings together two aspects achieving home energy efficiency. Ian Poole, a thermal imaging volunteer with Biggar Area Climate Care, first explains the science behind measuring temperatures and inferring heat flows with an infrared camera, and highlight some of the pitfalls in interpreting these images to identify home heat loss. Chris Carus of LOCO follows up explaining how do heat pumps work in old buildings, separating myth from science. Come along to hear a clear explanation grounded in both the physics of heat transfer and practical experience of dealing with hundreds of older Scottish homes Free, with tea/coffee on us! BACC at Biggar Science Festival

 Come see us the Gillespie Center on Saturday 12th September. BACC at the Science Festival. At this drop in event volunteers will be demonstrating a thermal imaging camera and explaining how they use it to help householders identify energy efficiency improvements. You can sign up for a free home survey this winter. Additionally, you can help in running a live experiment to show in a simple direct way that CO2 really is a greenhouse gas.
